  1. The term "damages" in law, is compensation
  2. for personal injuries caused by negligence 
  3. or breach of contract. In the case of breach
  4. of contract the complainant can claim all 
  5. the financial loss he or she has suffered.
  6. Damages for personal injuries include
  7. compensation for loss of earnings, as well
  8. as for the injury itself. The court might
  9. reduce the damages if the claimant was 
  10. partly to blame. In the majority of cases,
  11. the parties involved reach an out-of-court
  12. settlement, in which they come to a 
  13. compromise without going to court.
